Best Rifle Slings in 2025: Magpul MS4, Slingster, Vickers Compared

Published 2025-06-15 · GunDeal Alerts · Price range: $25–$65

A sling is the "holster" for your rifle. It keeps your hands free, retains the weapon during transitions, and stabilizes your shots from standing. If you own an AR-15 and don't have a sling, fix that today — it's one of the most important accessories alongside an optic and a light.

Here are the proven slings from r/gundeals, what to pay, and how to choose between them.

Two-Point vs Single-Point: Which Do You Need?

Two-Point (Recommended)

Attaches at two points on the rifle (stock and handguard). The rifle hangs diagonally across your body. Better weapon retention, more stable shooting platform, keeps the rifle tighter to your body. This is what you should buy.

Single-Point

Attaches at one point (rear of receiver). The rifle hangs straight down from your neck. Allows fast transitions between shoulders but the rifle swings freely and hits you in the groin when you let go. Most experienced shooters have moved away from single-point slings.

The Magpul MS4 can convert between two-point and single-point, giving you the option to try both. But you'll almost certainly end up using it in two-point mode.

1. Magpul MS4 Dual QD — Best Value

The Magpul MS4 is the best-selling rifle sling in America for good reason. It's a dual-mode sling that runs as a two-point by default and converts to single-point with one clip. Comes with QD swivels included, which saves you $10–$15 over buying them separately.

The MS4 uses Magpul's proven quick-adjust slider. Not quite as fast as the BFG Vickers, but perfectly functional. The webbing is 1.25 inches wide — a good balance of slim profile and comfort.

What to Pay for Magpul MS4

  • Great deal: Under $35 (QD swivels included)
  • Good deal: $35–$45
  • Average: $45–$55

MS4 vs MS1: The MS1 is Magpul's sling without single-point conversion. It's slightly cheaper ($25–$35) and available in a padded version. If you know you want two-point only, the MS1 Padded is a great option.

2. Blue Force Gear Vickers — Fastest Adjustment

The BFG Vickers sling (designed with Larry Vickers) has the smoothest, fastest quick-adjust mechanism on the market. One pull on the tab and the sling goes from tight (shooting) to loose (transitioning) almost instantly. It's a genuine quality-of-life difference over cheaper adjustment systems.

The Vickers comes in standard webbing and a padded version. The padded version adds comfort for heavy rifles or long days but is slightly bulkier. Made in the USA with Berry-compliant materials.

What to Pay for BFG Vickers Sling

  • Standard — Great deal: Under $40
  • Standard — Good deal: $40–$50
  • Padded — Good deal: $50–$60

3. Edgar Sherman Design ESD Sling — Best Minimalist

The ESD sling is dead simple: thin webbing, a quick-adjust slider, and metal hardware. No padding, no extra features, just a sling that works. The slim profile (1 inch wide) lays flatter against the rifle than wider slings, making it popular for competitive shooters and minimalists.

The ESD's adjustment is fast and smooth. Some shooters actually prefer the thinner webbing because it's less bulky under the hand during shooting. At $30–$40, it's an outstanding value.

4. Ferro Concepts Slingster — Most Comfortable

The Ferro Slingster is the premium padded sling of choice on r/gundeals. It has a wide padded section that distributes the weight of heavy rifles (looking at you, suppressed SBRs) across your shoulder and neck. The quick-adjust pull tab is smooth and easy to grab.

If you're running a heavy rifle or spending long days in training classes, the Slingster's padding is worth the extra cost. The limited edition colorways also drop on r/gundeals and tend to sell fast.

What to Pay for Ferro Slingster

  • Great deal: Under $45
  • Good deal: $45–$55
  • Average: $55–$65

5. Viking Tactics VTAC — The Original Quick-Adjust

The VTAC sling (designed by Kyle Lamb) pioneered the quick-adjust two-point sling concept that everyone else copied. It uses a simple pull-tab system with a unique "V" shaped adjustment strap. Available in padded and non-padded versions.

The VTAC is still an excellent sling, though newer designs from BFG and Ferro have arguably caught up or surpassed it in adjustment speed and comfort. It remains a solid, battle-proven choice, especially at its price point.

QD Mounts: What You Need

Most modern slings use QD (Quick Detach) swivels that push into QD sockets on your rifle. You'll need:

  • Rear QD point: Most stocks (Magpul, B5, BCM) have a built-in QD socket. If yours doesn't, a QD end plate ($10–$15) replaces the castle nut end plate.
  • Front QD point: M-LOK QD mounts ($10–$15) from Magpul, BCM, or Aero attach directly to your handguard.
  • QD swivels: Some slings include them (Magpul MS4), others don't. Budget $10–$15 for a pair of quality swivels (Magpul, BCM, or GrovTec).

Pro tip: Mount the front QD point on the side of your handguard (9 o'clock for right-handed, 3 o'clock for left-handed), not at the bottom (6 o'clock). This keeps the sling from interfering with accessories mounted underneath and pulls the rifle tighter against your body.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sling for a home defense rifle?

Any quality two-point sling. The Magpul MS4 is the default recommendation because it includes QD swivels and works great. Keep it adjusted tight so the rifle doesn't flop around in close quarters.

Do I need a sling for a pistol/SBR?

Yes. Slings are even more important on short weapons because they're easier to take away from you in a struggle. A sling retains the weapon. For short setups, the ESD or unpadded BFG Vickers in a shorter length works well.

How should I set up my sling?

Rear attachment at the stock QD point. Front attachment on the handguard QD point. Sling runs along the support-hand side. Adjust so the rifle sits at your belt line when hanging freely, and tightens to your shoulder when you pull it up to shoot. Practice the transition.

Note on deal tracking: Sling deals are infrequent on r/gundeals — slings are low-margin items that don't get the deep discounts that optics and firearms do. The prices above reflect typical sale prices. Magpul and BFG occasionally drop 10-15% during holiday sales.
