Best DMR & AR-10 Rifles in 2025: .308 & 6.5 Creedmoor Builds

Published 2025-06-15 · GunDeal Alerts · Price range: $800–$3,000

The AR-10 platform gives you AR-15 ergonomics with full-power rifle cartridges. Whether you're building a designated marksman rifle (DMR) for reaching out to 800+ yards or a semi-auto hunting rig, the AR-10 delivers. But the platform is more complex than the AR-15 — parts compatibility is a minefield. Here's how to navigate it.

Quick Comparison: Best AR-10 / DMR Rifles

Critical: DPMS vs. SR-25/ArmaLite Pattern

This is the single biggest gotcha with AR-10 builds. Unlike the AR-15, where everything is milspec and interchangeable, the AR-10 world has two incompatible receiver patterns:

DPMS / LR-308SR-25 / ArmaLite

Rule of thumb: If you're building, go DPMS pattern. If you're buying a factory complete rifle, the pattern matters less because the manufacturer handles compatibility.

Best Build Platform: Aero Precision M5 ($800–$1,200)

The Aero Precision M5 is to the AR-10 what Aero's M4E1 is to the AR-15 — the builder's choice. DPMS pattern, excellent machining, and broad aftermarket compatibility. Pair an M5 receiver set with a Ballistic Advantage or Criterion barrel and you have a sub-MOA DMR for well under $1,500.

What to Pay for Aero M5 Components

  • M5 receiver set (stripped): $250–$350
  • M5 complete upper (.308, 18"): $450–$600
  • M5 complete rifle: $900–$1,200
  • Great deal: Under $800 complete

For barrel selection, see our barrel guide — many of the same brands (Ballistic Advantage, Criterion, Faxon) make AR-10 barrels with the same quality.

Budget Pick: PSA PA-10 ($650–$900)

Palmetto State Armory's PA-10 is the cheapest way to get into the AR-10 game. DPMS pattern, complete rifles regularly drop under $700 on r/gundeals. You won't win a precision match, but it runs and it hits at distance.

The PA-10 Gen 3 fixed most early reliability issues. If you find one under $700 with a stainless barrel, that's a solid buy for a hunting or range rifle.

Lightweight King: POF Revolution ($1,800–$2,200)

The POF (Patriot Ordnance Factory) Revolution did what everyone thought was impossible: they built a .308 AR on an AR-15-sized receiver. At 7.3 lbs unloaded, it's the lightest .308 semi-auto you can buy. The tradeoff is a proprietary system — you can't mix and match parts like a DPMS build.

The Revolution uses a unique gas system and barrel extension. It's butter-smooth with a match trigger and anti-tilt buffer tube. If weight is your top priority (hunting, patrol), this is the answer.

Match-Grade: LaRue PredatAR ($1,800–$2,400)

Mark LaRue doesn't build hype — he builds rifles. The LaRue PredatAR comes with LaRue's legendary MBT-2S trigger (the best value trigger in the AR world), a match-grade barrel, and hand-fitted components. These rifles consistently shoot sub-MOA with match ammo.

LaRue rifles are built to order with lead times of 4-8 weeks. They rarely show up on the secondary market because owners don't sell them.

.308 Winchester vs. 6.5 Creedmoor

Our take: If you're shooting inside 600 yards and want cheaper ammo and longer barrel life, go .308. If you're stretching past 600 yards or shooting PRS-style matches, 6.5 Creedmoor's superior ballistics are worth it. Barrel Length Guide for AR-10 DMRs

  • 16": Minimum for .308. Loses about 100 fps vs. 18". More maneuverable, louder. Good for a do-everything carbine.
  • 18": The sweet spot for a DMR. Full velocity from .308 and 6.5 CM, manageable overall length. This is what we recommend.
  • 20": Marginal velocity gain over 18" (25-50 fps). Longer sight radius for irons. Competition-focused. Heavier.

Gas system: All AR-10s at these barrel lengths should run a rifle-length gas system. It produces less felt recoil and is easier on parts than mid-length or carbine gas. If a manufacturer offers an 18" barrel with mid-length gas, look elsewhere.

Weight Considerations

AR-10s are heavy. A typical 18" barreled AR-10 with optic, loaded magazine, and bipod weighs 11-13 lbs. That's fine for a bench rifle but miserable to carry in the field. If weight matters:

  • POF Revolution: 7.3 lbs base
  • Pencil or lightweight barrel profile: saves 8-12 oz
  • Carbon fiber handguard: saves 4-6 oz
  • Lightweight stock (Magpul SL-S vs. MOE Rifle): saves 2-4 oz

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use AR-15 parts on an AR-10?

Some parts interchange: triggers, pistol grips, buffer tubes (mostly), stocks, and safeties. Most other parts (BCG, barrel, handguard, upper/lower receivers, buffer, buffer spring) are NOT interchangeable. Always verify compatibility. For AR-15 build components, see our BCG guide and charging handle guide.

Is an AR-10 good for hunting?

Absolutely. A .308 or 6.5 CM AR-10 is a capable big-game hunting rifle. The semi-auto action gives you a fast follow-up shot. The downsides are weight and length. If you want a lighter hunting option, see our best hunting rifles guide for bolt-action options.

Do I need an adjustable gas block?

Highly recommended. AR-10s are overgassed from the factory to ensure reliability across ammo types. An adjustable gas block (Superlative Arms, SLR) lets you tune the gas for smoother cycling and less recoil. It's almost mandatory if you plan to run a suppressor.
