Best Range Ammo (FMJ)

For practice and plinking, reliability matters more than brand. These are the most commonly posted (and most upvoted) on r/gundeals:

• CCI Blazer Brass — The r/gundeals default. Clean, reliable, cheap. Brass case (reloadable). Usually the first to hit sub-18¢ prices.
• Federal American Eagle — Slightly more expensive than Blazer but widely available. 16-19¢/rd on sale.
• Norma Range & Training — Underrated. Often cheapest per round. Brass case. Occasionally sub-16¢.
• Winchester White Box — Available everywhere. Not the cheapest online but good for "I need it today" Walmart runs.

Avoid for range: Steel-case (Tula, Wolf) if your range bans it — many indoor ranges do. Otherwise steel case at sub-15¢ is fine for guns that eat it (Glocks, most modern pistols).

Best Carry Ammo (JHP)

For self-defense, you want consistent expansion and penetration. These are the community standards:

• Federal HST 147gr — The law enforcement standard. Consistent expansion through barriers. Usually 50-70¢/rd on sale. This is what most people should carry.
• Speer Gold Dot 124gr — Another LE favorite. 55-70¢/rd. Slightly different ballistic profile — both are excellent.
• Hornady Critical Duty 135gr +P — Designed for barrier penetration. Slightly more expensive. Good for full-size guns.
• Sig V-Crown 124gr — Good performance at a lower price point. Often 45-55¢/rd on sale.

How to Buy 9mm Smart

1. Buy in Bulk (1,000 rounds)

The best per-round prices are always on case quantities (1,000 rounds). The math:

• 50-round box at $12 = 24¢/rd
• 1,000-round case at $170 = 17¢/rd
• Savings: $70 per case, or 29%

2. Factor in Shipping
